Paul Collingwood Wary of the Future of Test Cricket

Twenty20 format has brought lots of money for the cricketers and that is what made England’s twenty20 captain Paul Collingwood worried about the future of test cricket. Collingwood, who earlier captained England’s ODI team, has revealed his concern regarding the bleak future of test cricket. He said that if test cricket can not generate more money in future, then the young generation would be lured by twenty20 format and the shortest version of the game would be the ultimate goal for young generation.

Paul Collingwood recalled his childhood when he was dreaming to play for England in test cricket and take part in the prestigious Ashes series against Australia. He has also added that if a player can receive a 10 times bigger an amount by playing only few weeks in twenty20 format, compared to month long test series, then young generation would only go for the shortest version of the game.

Well, I totally agree with Paul Collingwood and there is no doubt, the future of test cricket is bleak now. In order to keep the longest format of the game alive, ICC should take some major steps to make the format more competitive and less exhaustive. Otherwise, test cricket will also be found in historian’s book one day. Moreover, I am totally excited with the twenty20 format and I can see this as a tool that could be effectively used to spread cricket around the world.
