Manchester United vs Chelsea Live Score and Updates: 11 January 2009

Manchester United is going to host Chelsea in a high-profile premier league encounter on Sunday (11 January 2009). With both sides looking to clinch all three points, a mind-blowing match seems to be at stake for the football fans. There is no doubt that neither Manchester Untied nor Chelsea have been at their best in the recent weeks, but still, the upcoming match seems to be an highly competitive affair.

Match: Manchester United vs Chelsea; English Premier League 2008-2009

Date: 11 January 2009, Sunday

Venue: Old Trafford, Manchester, England

Kick off: 16:00 BST (British Standard Time)

Chelsea secures the second place in the standings with 3 points adrift of leader Liverpool. From 20 matches, Chelsea managed 42 points with 12 wins, 6 draws and 2 defeats. Chelsea’s recent form is not satisfactory at all as the Blues dropped 11 out of possible 21 points in the recent weeks in premier league. Chelsea fans can feel happy to know that their favorite team lost only twice in their 16 meetings with the Red Devils. However, the fact is that both the defeats, including Chelsea’s defeat on penalty shoot-out in the Champions League final, came in last one and half years. Chelsea has enough reasons to fear about the upcoming clash. In recent weeks, Chelsea’s lackluster form cost them points thanks to drawn games against weaker opponents like Fulham and West Ham United.

For Manchester United, there are a number of things at stake ahead of the match. They would want to regain their confidence back after last Wednesday’s 1-0 defeat to Championship outfit Derby County in the Carling Cup semi final. No doubt, Sir Alex Ferguson boys will have to be at their best to defeat Chelsea who are so far unbeaten on the road this season. Even then, Manchester United has their home record to be inspired for, as the Red Devils are unbeaten at home so far this season. That means, on Sunday, you will see the team with best home record hosting the team with best away record. That is where you can find an indication of an exciting bout at Old Trafford.

Manchester Untied sits at the third place in the league standings with 38 points from 18 outings. That means, if Manchester United can defeat Chelsea, and then win the midweek encounter with Wigan Athletic, then the Ferguson’s side can easily move two points ahead of Scolari’s Chelsea with still a match in hand. No doubt, it would not be easy for the Ferguson’s students to pick up three points against Chelsea who will go into the game on the back of an undefeated away record this season. At one point, both Chelsea and Manchester Untied suffered the same fate in the first half of the premier league season, as both the clubs were defeated by two other ‘Big Four’ clubs Liverpool and Arsenal.

Last time, Chelsea visited Old Traffrod in 2007 was the first game under the then coach Avram Grant who had just taken over following Jose Mourinho’s quit as Chelsea manager. Chelsea lost the game 2-0, making a poor start for the new coach. For Chelsea’s current manager Luiz Felipe Scolari, the upcoming match is going to be first game as Chelsea manager at Old Trafford, even though the Brazilian has already faced Manchester United at home this season which ended up in a 1-1 draw.

Manchester United fans should be happy to know that experienced centre back Rio Ferdinand has got over his back injury and returned to full training and now he seems be available for the Chelsea encounter. However, it has not been confirmed yet. If he comes back then Jonny Evans will have to make him way in the Manchester United defense. Patrice Evra also returns to action after serving five-match suspension in domestic football.

Guardian reported:

Ferdinand has not played since the goalless draw at Tottenham Hotspur on December 13, but came through a full training session today with no apparent reaction to his back problems.

Patrice Evra is returning from his five-match domestic suspension and is expected to come straight back into the team at the expense of John O'Shea, while Ferdinand should take over from Jonny Evans in a defence that attracted strong criticism from Ferguson after Wednesday's 1–0 defeat to Derby County in the first leg of the Carling Cup semi-final.

Chelsea fans will definitely cheer on the return of Captain John Terry after the three-match suspension. Terry’s presence will bolster Chelsea back line, while Michael Ballack will also return to action following a ban and he is now available to catch the trip to Old Trafford. Youngster Jose Bosingwa will also be part of the trip, though the player suffered a knock recently. However, Chelsea manager Scolari will not get the service of injured Alex and Florent Malouda.

Who is favorite? It is tough ball to play. Both sides have some excellent players who have class, experience and the power to dominate over their opponent. As home team, Manchester Untied may have some advantage, but it seems not be a big problem for Chelsea who has not lost any game on the road. I just hope that this will be an exciting match with both sides looking to give their best to pick up not only three points but also a confidence-booster result from the match.
