Australia vs South Africa 3rd ODI 2009: South Africa Took 2-1 Lead Winning by 3 Wickets

South Africa defeated Australia by 3 wickets in the third match of the five-match ODI series today at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG). With this victory, South Africa took 2-1 lead with 2 matches left in the series. Winning the toss, Australia decided to bat first and was dismissed for 269 runs with 4 balls remaining in hands. Opener David Warner scored highest 69 runs, followed by 43 runs from other opener Shaun Marsh, 36 and 33 runs from David Hussey and James Hopes respectively. South African spinner Johan Botha picked up 3 wickets, while Dale Steyn and Makhaya Ntini got 2 wickets each.

South Africa reached the winning target of 270 losing the 7 wickets with 21 balls left in hands. Opener Herschelle Gibbs played an excellent innings of 64 runs off 52 balls, while Jacques Kallis scored another impressive innings of 60 from 72 balls. South Africa was put under pressure when they lost 3 wickets pretty quickly in the middle order, but the visiting side was guided towards the victory thanks to Mark Boucher’s 31, Albie Morkel’s 40 and Neil McKenzie’s 27 runs. In fact, Albie Morkel’s 22-ball 40 was instrumental behind South Africa’s 3-wicket victory. Nathan Hauritz is the most successful bowler for Australia as the off spinner picked up 2 wickets for 60. For his quick-fire match winning innings brought him the man of the match award.
